Medellín

Colombia's second city, with 2.4 million inhabitants and 3.7 across the metro area, in the department of Antioquia and known as the City of Eternal Spring for its steady climate, between 17 and 28°C all year. Along with Bogotá it is one of the country's two cities with settled gay neighbourhoods, bars with an openly gay clientele and centres that provide counselling and legal advice to the LGBTQI+ community. The gay-friendly axis is concentrated in El Poblado, around Parque Lleras, the paisa zona rosa, with the Manila neighbourhood as the emerging area. Colombia passed marriage equality in 2016, by a Constitutional Court ruling.

Living
as LGBTQI+ in Medellín

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

Medellín has a settled gay-friendly scene, with a good twenty venues spread mainly across El Poblado, between Parque Lleras and the Manila neighbourhood, and to a lesser extent across Laureles. Along with Bogotá it is one of the two Colombian cities with recognisable gay neighbourhoods and bars with an openly gay clientele.

The scene combines declared gay bars, such as Donde Aquellos, Bohemos and Chiquita, mainstream clubs that suit an LGBT crowd, such as Industry and Vintrash, drag venues and themed nights at mixed places. Parque Lleras works as the big zona rosa at night, from Wednesday to Sunday. The scale is smaller than Bogotá's, which is the capital of Colombian Pride, but the quality of life and that 17 to 28°C climate have turned Medellín into a hub for LGBT digital nomads since 2020, which has widened the queer cultural offer, with events, foreign communities and gay-owned restaurants and cafés.

Pride and events

Medellín holds its Marcha de la Diversidad LGBTI every year, usually between June and July, aligned with the international Pride season. In Colombia there are annual marches in several cities, from Medellín to Bogotá, Cali and Barranquilla, though attendance figures are not always published. The paisa one is a notable size, but smaller than Bogotá's, which is the country's LGBT reference.

Beyond the annual Pride, the city livens up with the Cinescena international LGBTI film festival and with the circuit parties organised by the growing foreign community. The nightlife works all year thanks to the climate, without the seasonal swings of the Southern Cone or Caribbean capitals. And to experience a big Colombian Pride, the alternative is Bogotá, in July.

El Poblado · Parque Lleras + Manila

Medellín's gay-friendly axis is concentrated in El Poblado, the metro area's 14th commune. Its core is Parque Lleras, between 9th and 10th streets and the 35th and 38th carreras, officially recognised as a zona rosa, which in Latin America is what they call the area of nightlife, restaurants, clubs and young people's leisure.

Inside El Poblado, the Manila neighbourhood, one of the district's 22 original barrios, is the sub-area perceived as emerging gay-friendly: signature bars, quiet restaurants, daytime cafés and a relaxed queer life. The upmarket offer was built after the Milla de Oro and the zona rosa settled as an exclusive tourist area. There is no formal gay village in the style of Chueca or the Castro, but the ecosystem is comfortable and can be crossed on foot in twenty minutes.

Community and services

Both Bogotá and Medellín have centres that provide counselling and legal advice to the LGBTQI+ community. Among health services, the private network, with the Hospital General de Medellín, the Clínica Las Américas and the Clínica El Rosario, accepts international insurance, and post-exposure prophylaxis is available in emergency departments within a 72-hour window. PrEP is available in the public system for residents, but it is not easy to obtain as a visitor.

There is a risk worth keeping in mind, and it is not specifically LGBT but general urban: the so-called paseo millonario, a robbery with ATM extortion that starts in a taxi, and scopolamine in bars. Two precautions avoid almost all of it: always use Uber and never accept drinks from strangers.

4 areas with their own scene — documented LGBTQI+ venues, bars and nightlife.

El Poblado · Parque Lleras

Zona Rosa · 15+ venues · nightlife epicenter · gay-friendly

Parque Lleras is Medellín's nightlife heart. It sits between 9th and 10th streets and the 35th and 38th carreras, and is recognised as a zona rosa, which in Latin America designates the area of nightlife, restaurants, clubs and young people's leisure. The area settled after the Milla de Oro, in the seventies, turned it into an exclusive tourist zone. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan and gay-friendly by default, with several visible LGBT bars and clubs, from Donde Aquellos to Bohemos and Industry. And since 2020 it has been a reference point for LGBT digital nomads.

Manila (El Poblado)

El Poblado sub-zone · emerging gay strip · bars and restaurants

Manila is an inner neighbourhood of El Poblado, one of the district's 22 original barrios. In recent years it has settled as the sub-area seen as emerging gay-friendly, with restaurants, cafés, signature bars and a daytime life that suits an LGBT crowd. It is quieter and more small-venue than the roar of Parque Lleras, which sits five to ten minutes' walk away. A good option for staying in the middle of it or for working remotely.

Laureles

Alternative residential · gay-friendly · local life · less touristy

A residential neighbourhood to the west and a more authentic alternative to El Poblado, with fewer foreigners and more paisa life. The atmosphere is gay-friendly by urban default, though it has no declared gay venues: daytime life is in the cafés and the parks and the night is in mixed bars. Prices sit below El Poblado's, so it suits long stays or anyone wanting to step off the tourist circuit. It connects to El Poblado by taxi or metro, in twenty to twenty-five minutes.

Envigado

Southern neighboring municipality · residential · local paisa life

An independent municipality to the south, inside the Aburrá Valley metro area, residential and quiet. It has no gay scene of its own, but it serves as a cheaper, more local base, with traditional paisa life among parks, markets and cafés. It connects to El Poblado by metro or taxi, in fifteen to twenty minutes. It is an option for digital nomads after authenticity and lower prices.

Practical tips
for traveling to Medellín

The practical stuff so your trip works — transport, accommodation, scene and where not to miss out. Information validated and reviewed on 2026-05-18.

→ Eternal Spring

Eternal Spring · 17-28°C year-round · avoid Oct-Nov (rains)

Medellín is called the City of Eternal Spring, with steady temperatures between 17 and 28°C all year and no marked seasons. December to March and June to August are the driest and busiest months, with the best light and the scene at full tilt. April to May and October to November are wetter, with daily afternoon showers, though without hurricanes. The Feria de las Flores, in August, is the city's big event and sends hotel demand soaring. With no hurricane season and no temperature extremes, travelling here works in any month.

→ Paisa Spanish

Paisa Spanish · English OK in El Poblado · marked accent

The language is Colombian Spanish in its paisa variant, with a marked accent and its own vocabulary: parcero for friend, chévere for anything good and bacano for anything cool. English gets by in El Poblado because of the number of foreigners and digital nomads and because of US and European tourism, so it works in tourist bars and restaurants, hotels, coworking spaces and Uber. In Laureles, in the Centro and in working-class neighbourhoods English drops off sharply and basic Spanish helps a great deal. Anyone who speaks it meets no friction at all, just different vocabulary.

→ Colombian Peso

Colombian Peso · card universal · USD not accepted

The currency is the Colombian peso, at around 4,500 to the euro and 4,000 to the dollar, though it is worth checking daily. The dollar is not accepted as regular payment, unlike in Cancún, so always pay in pesos. Cards work in El Poblado, in Laureles, in the hotels and in the restaurants. There are ATMs on every corner, from Bancolombia, BBVA and Davivienda, but watch for the paseo millonario: withdraw at ATMs inside banks or shopping centres and avoid doing it on the street at night. The 10% tip is voluntary in restaurants, either included or asked about, in taxis you leave 1,000 to 2,000 pesos and in bars it is not compulsory.

→ Metro + Metrocable

Metro + Metrocable · gray Uber (semi-legal) · yellow taxis · don't walk Centro at night

The metro has two lines and, with the Metrocable cable cars, covers the north-south axis and connects El Poblado with the Centro and the neighbouring municipalities. The rechargeable card is the Cívica. Uber works, though it is semi-legal in Colombia and operates with private vehicles, so the driver usually asks you to sit in front to avoid fines: the price is fixed in the app and it is far safer than hailing a taxi in the street. Yellow taxis are fine if the meter is on, and unlicensed ones should be avoided. José María Córdova airport is 30 to 45 kilometres from El Poblado, with an Uber or taxi at 80,000 to 120,000 pesos and 45 minutes to an hour, or the airport bus at 14,000. And in the Centro, at night you do not walk: always Uber.

→ El Poblado first choice

El Poblado first choice · Laureles local alternative · avoid Centro lodging

El Poblado is the first choice without argument for an LGBT crowd and for digital nomads: Parque Lleras and Manila are on foot, and that is where the hotel supply gathers, from the Click Clack to the Charlee, along with the upmarket apartments. Laureles is the more local, cheaper alternative, gay-friendly by urban default though without declared venues, and it works well for long stays. Envigado and the other southern municipalities offer lower prices and residential paisa life. Avoid the Centro and La Candelaria for sleeping: they are interesting by day, but at night the area is not safe, because of the risk of muggings and of scopolamine in the bars. For the Feria de las Flores in August, for Pride in June or July and for December, book one or two months ahead.

→ El Poblado private network

El Poblado private network · PEP in ER · safe tap water · 1,500m altitude

The private health network that sees tourists includes the Hospital General de Medellín, the Clínica Las Américas and the Clínica El Rosario, and it accepts international insurance. Post-exposure prophylaxis is available in private emergency departments, within a 72-hour window. PrEP is in the public system for residents, but it is not easy as a visitor. Rapid STI testing is done at private clinics and pharmacies. Tap water is drinkable, because the EPM network is a regional reference, though many visitors prefer bottled. The city sits at around 1,500 metres, so there is no altitude sickness, but watch out if you go on to Bogotá, at 2,640, or onto Andean routes. And there are almost no mosquitoes, thanks to the climate, so dengue and zika are not an issue in the city.
